yes. we have a demon living on our balcony.
alternate title i considered for this post: why we spent an entire afternoon wandering around coimbatore looking for 'one of those demon masks that people put on cars and houses under construction.'
we LOVE having a balcony- and not just because we don't have an dryer for our clothes, and hang them all dry. we love it because we can sit out here in the mornings or in the evenings and listen to the chatter of aunties and the dinging of bicycle bells and the occasional autorickshaw that ventures into our apartment complex. most mornings, you can find j out here with a cup of coffee or tea and a good book, reading. we have a fantastic cross breeze from our balcony, and it gives us fantastic light in our living room. the only problem is, our local pigeons love our balcony even more than we do.
enter the demon on our balcony.
i did some extensive research a little random googling and discovered that pigeons won't roost near humans, or near human looking things.
and because every indian problem has a uniquely indian solution, j and i bought two of these demon masks- one to keep the pigeons off our balcony, and one to keep them away from our bedroom window (there's nothing quite like the creepy hmmm-mmm ing of pigeons RIGHT outside your window at 6 am).
our apartment complex has a number of rules and regulations those who live here have to abide by. we're hoping that these demons, used to scare away other demons (the logic of that one eludes me, though i can't pretend there isn't plenty about my home culture that doesn't make sense, either), that as i mentioned above can be found everywhere, from buildings under construction, to nicer houses to the backs and undersides of trucks and busses and autorickshaws, aren't listed in the 'things that are forbidden' rules of the complex. although, we agreed that it would be pretty hilarious if the foreigners got themselves in trouble for something very uniquely indian.
