this past weekend, we took our final weekend regional trip to the temple town of tanjore. i had been to chennai, madurai, kochi before and knew what to expect. tanjore was new to me, and i was surprised by how much i enjoyed it.
we arrived at tanjore's famous brihadeshwara temple right as the sun was getting low in the sky. perfect lighting for a sandstone temple, no?
temple elephant. give this guy Rs. 10 (about 20 cents) and he'll 'bless' you by putting his trunk on your head and letting you take a picture. i'm too chicken- elephant snot in my hair doesn't sound that much fun?
these lovely ladies were all dressed up to perform bharatanatyam, traditional dance from tamil nadu. we happened to be visiting the temple the night of their performance. win!
this little one couldn't have been more than 7 or 8 years old. isn't she adorable? (she was a talented dancer, too.)
this temple was built in 1010 by a guy named rajaraja. it was simple and beautiful, in a way a lot of the brightly colored temples here aren't. (can i say that? i just did.) it also had some beautifully green grass, which is definitely a luxury here in india.
i've seen a lot of hindu temples in my day, but this one was different. it was less crazy, more quiet, and the intricate carvings spoke for themselves minus all the paint. thank you, tanjore, for this beauty!
this isn't temple related. heck, it's not even near the temple. but i love rice paddies and i think they're beautiful, so why not?
______
yep. i have a watermark now. taking pictures has really been my only artistic outlet since graduating from college (and leaving behind studios and supplies and mentors), so i figured it's about time i start taking credit for my pictures, eh? don't judge.
